Boulangerie in Paris

  • une baguette: traditional French stick
  • une brioche: a sort of bread bun
  • une fougasse aux olives / aux anchoies: a savoury bread, with olives or anchovies; very popular in the South of France
  • une ficelle: a really skinny French stick (literally: a piece of string)
  • Un gros pain: like a baguette, but much bigger, to feed a family
  • Un pain au noix: bread with nuts in
  • Un pain de campagne: country style bread, rough crust.
  • Un pain de mie: Literally "crumb bread"; resembles our sliced loaf
  • une quiche lorraine, or une quiche aux + ingredients: Quiches come from Lorraine in the North of France.
  • une tarte aux oignons; aux olives; aux anchoies are very popular in the South of France.

  • un bonhomme en pain d'épice: a gingerbread man
  • un choux à la crème: profiterol type bun, with cream inside, covered in (usually) chocolate icing.
  • un éclair: a long choux pastry, filled with cream, covered in chocolate icing.
  • un gâteau forêt noire: Black forest cake; with chocolate cake, cream and cherries in layers with liqueur; covered in chocolate and cream.
  • un gâteau "quatre quarts" : de Bretagne; a "four quarters" cake from Brittany. A type of one layer sponge cake which often has preserved fruit, raisins or sultanas, or almonds added to it.
  • un kougelhopf: un gâteau d'Alsace, saupoudré de sucre fin; est fait de beurre, farine, raisins et amandes. Cake resembling a hat in shape, from Alsace; it's covered in icing sugar, and made from butter, flour, raisins and almonds.
  • un mille-feuille: (means 1000 leaves) often called a vanilla slice here; crispy pastry layers, separated by various fillings, often cream; with an icing on top.
  • le pain d'épice: gingerbread; the traditional product of Alsace
  • une tarte aux + any fruit that you like to name. Tasty pastry base filled with neatly layered slices or small pieces of the fruit.
